Hair loss can be frustrating, especially when the hairline begins to recede, the scalp becomes more visible, or  hair gradually becomes thinner with age. Because of this, many people are turning to simple homemade  hair-care remedies made with ingredients they already have at home. One popular combination is onion and Vaseline, often promoted as a natural formula for improving the appearance of thinning hair.
Onion has attracted attention in natural hair-care routines because it contains sulfur compounds and antioxidants. Sulfur is an important component of keratin, the protein that makes up much of the hair shaft. Onion juice has also been investigated in limited research for certain types of patchy hair loss, although this does not mean that onion can permanently stop every form of hair loss or reactivate dormant follicles.
Vaseline, also known as petroleum jelly, works very differently. It is primarily an occlusive moisturizer that forms a protective layer over the skin. When applied to the scalp or hair, it can help reduce moisture loss and make dry areas feel softer. However, Vaseline does not have established evidence showing that it can stimulate new hair follicles or reverse genetic hair loss.
A simple homemade mixture can be prepared by finely grating or blending a small onion and extracting a little of its juice. A small amount of petroleum jelly can then be mixed into the preparation to create a thicker topical treatment. Before applying anything containing onion to the scalp, it is important to perform a small patch test because onion can cause irritation, redness, burning, or itching in sensitive individuals.
If you decide to use an onion-based hair treatment, avoid applying it to broken, irritated, or inflamed skin. Keep the mixture away from the eyes and wash the scalp thoroughly if significant irritation develops. The strong smell of onion can also remain on the hair, so some people prefer using the treatment before shampooing.
