Homemade Foot Care Cream for Dry, Cracked Heels

Cracked heels develop gradually due to dry skin, repeated pressure, friction, and lack of moisture. While no homemade remedy can repair deep cracks overnight, a nourishing foot cream combined with regular exfoliation can help soften rough skin and improve the appearance of dry heels over time.

Here’s a simple DIY foot care recipe using common household ingredients.

Why Do Heels Crack?

Common causes include:

  • Dry skin
  • Standing for long periods
  • Walking barefoot
  • Cold or dry weather
  • Poorly fitting shoes
  • Aging
  • Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or eczema

Keeping the skin moisturized is one of the best ways to help prevent cracking.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons petroleum jelly or a thick fragrance-free foot cream
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil or olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon glycerin (optional, for extra hydration)

Step 1: Soak Your Feet

Fill a basin with warm water.

Soak your feet for 10–15 minutes to soften hardened skin.

For extra comfort, you can add a tablespoon of Epsom salt, although it is optional.

Step 2: Gently Exfoliate

Use a pumice stone or foot file to gently remove loose, dead skin.

Avoid scrubbing too aggressively, especially if your heels are painful or bleeding.

Step 3: Prepare the Cream

In a small bowl, mix together:

  • 2 tablespoons petroleum jelly or foot cream
  • 1 teaspoon coconut or olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon glycerin (optional)

If using lemon juice, add only a few drops. Lemon can irritate cracked skin and increase sun sensitivity, so it should not be applied to open cracks or wounds.

Mix until smooth.

Step 4: Apply Generously

Massage the cream into your heels, paying special attention to dry and rough areas.

Spend a few minutes working the moisturizer into the skin.

Step 5: Wear Cotton Socks

Put on a pair of clean cotton socks after applying the cream.

Leave them on overnight to help lock in moisture.

Repeat Regularly
